About us -Our Beginings
Welcome to our web site, Our Names are Kevin and Carol Pomfrey, and together we have been involved with the German Shepherd for seventeen years, Although Carol's parents had always had GSD's as pets when she was growing up. her father being an avid fan of the breed.
Our first dog together was a mongrel called Patch who we rescued even though his critique was not good, his previous owners saying he was boisterous and destructive. It has to be said that we never had a days problem in all the nine years we had him, and he joyfully accepted all our newcomers, cats and dogs alike.
Kevin had always wanted a German Shepherd and when his brother aquired a Gsd x Belgian Tervuren puppy we went along to see the litter.Boy were we green in those days, but when we saw this dirty little pup brought out of a dark shed, who could hardly open his eyes to the daylight, how could we walk away.
We duly paid the man and took our boy home where we set about bathing, worming and feeding him up until he became our beautiful big boy Luke
All was fine until at the age of two Luke dislocated his hip, we rushed him to the vet where his hip was put back in, within a few weeks it happened again, each time being extremly painful for Luke, We decided we should have an xray done and it was then discovered that both of his hips had absolutely no sockets to hold them in, and his activities would have to be minimal.
We were devastated, and made up our minds that if we were to get another GSD as we had planned We would seek out a reputable breeder where we could visit and see both parents, who of course would have to be hip scored.
Doing our home work we came across one such breeder, who though not a large commercial concern, knew the breed well and did everything he could to produce a healthy and well socialised puppy We visited him several times and when a litter became available we were privileged to pick out a little bitch, our first true pedigree,Greywing Isobel of Fayrelander,(Cassie) both her parents had excellent hip scores and came from good working lines, which she inherited and was a terific obedience dog.
Luke and Cassie became inseperable, but it was not to last,as Luke's problem got worse, We tried to keep him quite and give him gentle excersise but not wanting to see this usually playful and active boy in a cage for what could take years of operations, Kevin decided to give him peace.
Shortly after we purchased another bitch, a short coat this time, and half sister to Cassie, her name Nyrvana Running Wild In Fayrelander (Leah). Who became our foundation when we decided to breed.
We Set about using these same examples of having hip scores, finding a suitable Father, and giving the pups the best start that we could, If only to save someone going through what we had with Luke.
This paid off for us when quite by accident we met a couple shoping for a new puppy they were about to aquire, Asking them about the pup they told us they were going to the same place where we had bought Luke.Kevin,s face said it all, and we had to tell them Luke's story, relieved to have had a lucky escape, they waited for us to have a litter and purchased a little bitch, who they named Skye. Although they have recently lost Skye at the age of twelve years our friendship continues with Christmas cards and e-mails.
Through the Nyrvana connection we struck up another friendship with the then Ms Paula Hughes of the Lindella Kennels, from which we purchased a bitch puppy Lindella,s Magic Moments With Fayrelander (Megan) Paula had some beautiful dogs that had much success in the show ring, and also a potential sire for Leah & Megan. He Was Lindella's Oberon.
In time and duly mated we kept a bitch puppy from both these litters who were to be our Fayrelander Hootin Annie (Lacie) and Champion Fayrelander Ionie (Kim).
By then struck with the showing bug we campaigned both these girls, Who were both successful in the early days, but it was soon clear that Lacie preferred her home comforts whereby Kim was a born show girl.and became our first Champion in 2004. Lacie not to be outdone has from two seperate litters gone on to produce our other two Champions.
Namely Ch Fayrelander Maverick and Ch Fayrelander Polly Flinders.
We will always be greatful to them and those early breeders for our Success so far, and will continue to keep our Values, and Passion for this beautiful breed.
